As a new artist to The Harbour Gallery, we wanted to find out a little more about what inspires and challenges Frank Moorland’s work:
HG: When and how did you become an artist?
FM: I have always painted.
HG: What made you choose to work with oils?
FM: I really like the smell!
HG: Where do you find and what do you look to for inspiration?
FM: I love painting Exmoor, the farmed environment and those who work there.
HG: What unique style do you bring to your work?
FM: I work from life, observing the moor, the farming and the people. I also paint with speed.
HG: How has your style changed over the years? What influences have you had?
FM: My painting has got faster. Just like many of the old masters such as Whistler, Constable and Da Vinci.
HG: What do you find challenges you the most in your medium?
FM: Finding the time to do what I love which is to paint and balance that with the commercial aspects of this profession.
HG: Where are you looking to take your work next?
FM: My work will go wherever it goes….it just comes to me when I’m out walking and observing the moor.
